This is a quick guide to help you get started. If you need more info or if you have any questions, please

What is this?
This is an interactive dashboard that allows you to discover and study YouTube trending videos.
This dashboard consists of multiple tabs (pages.) In each tab, you'll find charts
and tables that deal with different aspects of trending videos.
Inside each tab, the charts are grouped into sections. Charts in each section talks
about the same topic. Sections are separated by a gray horizontal line.
For example, in the first tab which is "Views and Engagement," you can see the most
viewed/liked/commented trending videos, and you can see the typical number of views/likes/comments on
trending videos.
Filters
At the top of each tab, you can find two filters. These filters affect every thing on the page unless
otherwise stated1.
- The first filter is for video categories. For example, you can select "Comedy" and
"Education" categories to focus only on videos under these two categories. By default (when
nothing is selected,) all categories are shown.
- The second filter is for the date range of the data. You can use this filter to focus on a certain
time period. For example, you can study only what was trending in the last three months or from March to
May. By default, the data usually covers the last 12 months.
Section Filters
Other than the two filters at the top of each tab, there are filters that are specific to certain
sections. When there is a filter specific for a section, it only affects charts inside that section.
For example, in the "Views and Engagement" tab, in the section titled "How many views do
trending videos have when they become trending?," you can see a filter that filters by views. You can
use this filter to consider only videos with more than one million views for example in the chart and the
table below it in that section.
The reload button
If anything goes wrong in a tab (like if some charts don't load successfully,) click on the reload
button at the top right of the tab. It will reload the tab and should fix the issue.
Info & Glossary
The data source of YouTube trending videos is the trending section on YouTube. Usually it has around 200
videos at any time. There is a separate trending section for each country. The trending data on YouTube is
ephemeral, which means that you cannot access yesterday's trending videos on YouTube. Here with
Trendflow dashboard, not only you are able to see trending videos on past days, weeks, and months, but
also we process and analyze millions of data points to provide you with insights via clear data
visualizations. To know more about trending videos, please visit this page from YouTube.
You will come across some terms in this dashboard. We usually explain them in the dashboard but we do
that here too:
- First trending day (FTD): The first day the video was trending on. Many videos can be on the trending
list for more than one day. So for example in the dashboard, when we say "this is the number of
views on FTD" or "this is the number of views when the video became trending", we mean
the video views as of the first day the video became trending.
Notes
- YouTube updates their trending video lists many times every day (probably 50+ times a day). Some of
those updates might be small, for example, they might change a video rank from 4 to 5. We collect data
from YouTube four times a day. This means some of the numbers might not be 100% accurate, but we think
the accuracy provided in this dashboard data is useful enough for the purpose of this dashboard.
1: Just a few charts are not affected by the two filters at the top. You'll find a note telling you
that near those charts.
